A hat-trick from fullback Greg Inglis helped the South Sydney Rabbitohs overpower the Roosters as they drew first blood against their fierce local rivals.

Englishman Sam Burgess impressed for the Souths as they scored four tries and dominated the second half after the score was tied 6-6 at halftime.

Despite his hat-trick, Inglis put the praise back on his teammates for getting him into the right position at the right time.

“It was a good effort all around,” he said. “I’m just lucky enough to be playing in such a terrific team and I was just lucky enough to put that ball down in the end.”

Rabbitohs Head Coach Michael Maguire was pleased with his team’s performance but didn’t want to get overly excited.

“Our focus was really just about playing for each other and doing their job for each other and member of our team did that,” said Maguire. “The way our forward pack defended and got us going forward allowed our edges to do the things they were doing.

“It was a good night for us, but it’s round one – many to go.”
