If you haven’t already met, let us introduce Oleg Pliss – the nasty little hack that has affected Apple users across Australia.

The hack remotely takes control of devices – Macs, iPads and iPhones – and asks for a “$100 USD/EUR” ransom to be sent to a PayPal account.

In a statement to The Register, Apple, which denied any blame, said: “Apple takes security very seriously and iCloud was not compromised during this incident. Impacted users should change their Apple ID password as soon as possible and avoid using the same user name and password for multiple services.

“Any users who need additional help can contact AppleCare or visit their local Apple Retail Store.”

If you were scammed, the good news is that PayPal has said you’ll get a refund but it isn’t yet clear how many users have been affected or how long it will remain an issue.
