The One Show was taken off air last night after a fire alarm led to the BBC studio being evacuated as the show was live on air. And all because of a cup of tea.
One Show presenters Alex Jones and Matt Baker were interviewing actress Tamsin Greig when the fire alarm went off and a recorded voice told them not to use the lifts during the evacuation.
Jones stayed calm, saying: “Oh, I think that is our fire alarm. We better go to a VT just in case. We’re going to pop out, you watch this VT.”
As the studio emptied, The One Show was forced to switch to a video package of Nigel Slater’s Simple Suppers.
Once the video package finished TV screens were black for several seconds before a BBC announcement apologised for the interruption.
Jones later Tweeted that the fire alarm had been set off by a cup of tea.
“We’re all safe and well!!! Somebody was warming their tea up and the microwave set off the fire alarm! That’s live telly for you!” she wrote on Twitter.
