The women were attacked outside a home in Harold Street in what is believed to have been a domestic dispute.
Police found the body of the 52-year-old woman inside a public housing unit after neighbours reported hearing an argument and screams. A 61-year-old woman who had been stabbed was taken to North West Regional Hospital in Burnie with critical injuries.
A 39-year-old man, believed to be the dead woman’s former partner, was taken into custody at the scene.
Detective Inspector Rob Gunton says police and forensic officers are still trying to piece together what happened. He said: “One of the neighbours who called police certainly heard an argument, but we’re obtaining [statutory declarations] from them at the moment.”
Forensic scientists will be examining the unit tonight.
