While the armed conflicts that dominated World War II make compelling history, this exhibition shows the build-up to, and outbreak of war in September 1939 are equally fascinating.
Through historical material and personal recollections – of leaders and the British public alike – the seemingly inevitable slide to war is explored, as is the early months of the conflict dubbed the “phoney war” for its lack of battlefield hostilities.
