Well, it turns out, it was utter poppycock: The compilers of the Oxford English Dictionary have announced that the word’s definition with be updated in the next edition to reflect same-sex marriage, which is now legal in the UK.
After all that, it was that simple.
The OED’s 2012 edition defines marriage as: “The formal union of a man and a woman, typically as recognised by law, by which they become husband and wife.”
“We continually monitor the words in our dictionaries, paying particular to those words whose usage is shifting, so yes, this will happen with marriage,” a spokeswoman for Oxford University Press, the publishers of the Oxford dictionaries, told Gay Star News.
