Looking every bit like a potential Slam winner, Federer – who had been on the verge of wrapping up a faultless three set win – won 6-3 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 in three hours and 20 minutes.
The Swiss takes on Nadal in the semi finals on Friday.
“I’m looking forward to it,” said Federer. “I’m sure it’s going to be a good match, tough, brutal, all those things. We’ve had some epics over the years, he’s had an amazing comeback last year after being out for seven months with an injury. I hope we can slug it out here in a couple of days.”
Federer, now under the guidance of six-time Grand Slam champion Stefan Edberg, was simply too strong for Murray and he picked up where he left off against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Monday.
The match saw a marathon 19 minute game early in the fourth set.
