Captain Michael Clarke is also expected to return from a back injury for Friday’s MCG encounter with Sri Lanka.

He and Pattinson were both named on Tuesday in a 13-man squad to play the Lankans on Friday and the best-of-three finals series starting in Brisbane on Sunday.

Pattinson’s return from a foot injury came at the expense of fellow quick Ryan Harris, who will instead play Sheffield Shield cricket for Queensland in a match against NSW starting on Thursday.

Harris had already been dropped from the starting XI for Clint McKay in Sunday’s win over India.

The Queenslander was very expensive as Sri Lanka achieved a record run-chase in Hobart in the two sides’ most recent clash last Friday.

That was Sri Lanka’s second straight win over Australia, with their batsmen cruising to a bonus point victory at the SCG a week earlier.

Aggressive speedster Pattinson will be aiming to help turn the tables by continuing the excellent form he displayed in Tests before his injury lay-off.

The 21-year-old was man of the match twice in his first three Tests, once against New Zealand and once against India, before experiencing foot bone stress in his fourth at the SCG in early January.

But he showed he was over that injury on return for Victoria’s second XI last week, taking match figures of 6-37 against South Australia, breaking a batsman’s wrist along the way.

If Pattinson plays on Friday, it will be just his third one-day international, his most recent coming against Sri Lanka in Colombo last August.

The 13-man squad named on Tuesday is a likely pointer to that which will be named later this week for a one-day and Twenty20 tour of the West Indies in March.

National selector John Inverarity said while Harris had been dropped from the ODI squad, he remained a key member of the Test set-up.

“Ryan remains strongly in contention for selection for the (April) Test matches on the tour of the West Indies,” Inverarity said.

“Michael Clarke is making a good recovery and is likely to resume on Friday.

“The selectors will consider adding an extra player to this squad for the tri-series finals matches, if conditions warrant it.”

Squad: Michael Clarke (capt), Shane Watson, Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, Peter Forrest, Ben Hilfenhaus, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Brett Lee, Clint McKay, James Pattinson, Matthew Wade, David Warner.
