The so-called supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to earth, making it seems much bigger and brighter than normal, and it was beautiful on Sunday night as it also happened to be full moon.

As if that wasn’t enough, it accompanied the arrival of one of the great celestial displays (and the subject to today’s Google Doodle), the Perseid meteor shower.
