Australia has missed out on hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup after Qatar won the right to stage the event.
A couple of hundred diehard football fans had gathered at Sydney’s Circular Quay to find out if Australia would succeed in its bid for the 2022 tournament.
“It would be massive, absolutely massive – bigger than the (Sydney) Olympics if we got it,” football fan Tony Romano said.
He was among those ready watch the announcement live on a big screen set up at the Overseas Passenger Terminal.
“The scenes here after the Olympics got announced were fantastic, really memorable, so we wanted to be part of it this time,” said Peter Shelley, joined at the “live-site” venue by his wife and daughter.
“It’s going to be disappointing if we don’t get it … so it’s fingers crossed.”
Unfortunately for Australian football fans, their ambitious bid failed.
