It was an entertaining Champions League final, Atletico taking a first half lead through Diego Godin, following an error from veteran goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

The poorer neighbours and newly crowned La Liga champions defended that lead brilliantly, but in the end it was heartbreak as Real’s possession and attacking threat finally told – the equaliser coming through Sergio Ramos in the 93rdminute.

The last gasp strike took the game to extra time, where a fresher Real took the lead through £86 million Welshman Gareth Bale.

From there Atletico imploded, conceding two more goals – through Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo – with manager Diego Simeone coming onto the pitch to confront Real defender Raphael Varane after the third goal, and getting sent off.
