Halsey was subjected to horrendous tweets after the Liverpool v Manchester united match at Anfield which commented about he and his wife’s battles with cancer.

The referees union condemned the abuse as ‘beneath contempt’ and Halsey has taken the matter further making an official complaint to police.

“I can confirm that my family have made a complaint to the police,” Halsey told the BBC in wake of the incidents at the weekend.

“I will be speaking to the police on Wednesday after I have returned from refereeing Southampton v Sheffield Wednesday.”

The Tweets came in response to Halsey’s sending off of Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for a tackle on Manchester United’s Jonny Evans and for a contentious penalty awarded to United, too, that saw them emerge from the game as 2-1 winners.
