I once had my teeth whitened in a clinic that was on the 50th floor of a skyscraper. It had panoramic city views, chrome furnishings, leather dentist chairs and 24-carat gold mouth mirrors (okay I made that last bit up). When I left, I did indeed have whiter teeth, but I also had a significantly lighter wallet.

The Stratford branch of the Aesthetics of London clinic offered a somewhat different experience on the surface. Let’s just say there was a lot of expense spared when it came to the decor, and the treatment was carried out in what appeared to be the old stationary cupboard, with equipment that had seen better days.

However, this means they can offer teeth whitening for just £49.99, which is the cheapest I’ve ever known it to be. And, sure enough, after three gel applications and 15-minute sessions of sitting with a UV lamp hovering over my teeth – revealed in all their gummy glory by one of those plastic cheek retractors that make you look, well, ridiculous – I left the clinic with teeth as white as when I left the skyscraper clinic, and this time I had enough money left over to hit the pub. That makes this a winner in my books.
