Train station bars aren’t normally high on Londoners ‘go-to’ lists, but Oslo in Hackney is one I feel could buck that trend. Occupying the imposing old Hackney Central train station on Amhurst road the bar keeps true to its original design with exposed brick work and low hanging lights which give it an industrial feel.
I visited early on a Saturday night to sample their cocktail menu. It was standing area only outside so I took pew at one of the wooden tables near the bar. Although filled with effortlessly cool Hackney-types, the vibe was welcoming and relaxing.
First up, I tried the Salted Caramel Martini (Vodka, Kahlua, Brauhaus espresso coffee & Salted Caramel Liqueur) which should be renamed ‘happiness in a glass’ it’s so good. It’s gloriously decadent, so much so that I had a second.
I can never turn down as Tequila so I knew I had to try a Wild Peach Margarita (Ocho Blanco Tequila, Wild peach liqueur and fresh lime juice) the sweetness of the peach paired like a dream with the tartness of tequila.
My final drink of the evening was an Aviation (Tanqueray gin, Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur and Violette Liqueur) if, like me, you like your cocktails with a bit of bite to them, I suggest you try this.
Overall, Olso is an ideal place to indulge in a few cocktails before you dust off your dancing shoes in the club upstairs. They also serve food for those who would like to line their stomachs.
