The British comedy star went through the rules of what he could say on the night according to the Hollywood Foreign Press rules “No profanity. That’s fine, I’ve got a huge vocabulary; No nudity. See that’s a shame ’cause I’ve got a huge…vocabulary, but a tiny penis.”

Actress Jodie Foster responded well to one of Gervais’ more bawdy jokes when he referred to the 2011 jokes aimed at Mel Gibson “I’m not to libel anyone; and I mustn’t mention Mel Gibson this year — not his private life, his politics, his recent films, and especially not Jodie Foster’s ‘Beaver.’ I haven’t seen it myself, I’ve spoken to a lot of guys here, they haven’t seen it either. But that doesn’t mean it’s not any good.”

However, the man who seems to have wangled his way into the world of Hollywood through the back door still managed give his bosses something to sweat about when he explained “The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton — bit louder, bit trashier, bit drunker and more easily bought … Allegedly! Nothing’s been proved.”

In fact the stars were well prepared for the evening’s proceedings and most seemed to be more than happy to play along with the banters, with a crude penis-joke related theme running through many of comments made by fellow presenters.

Canadian comedian Seth Rogan took to the stage with the beautiful star of the Underworld films Kate Beckinsale, and exclaimed “Hello, I’m Seth Rogen, and I’m currently trying to conceal a massive erection.”

George Clooney suggested at one point in the proceedings that ‘Shame’ star Michael Fassbender was so blessed in the trouser department that “can play golf…with your hands behind your back,”

Overall the spirit of fun and good natured humour left Gervais to comment “You’re so much better than last year’s audience. They had a stick right up their ass.”
