Ricky Gervais has been asked to host the Golden Globes 2012, despite the controversy caused at this year’s ceremony by the comedian’s relentless hectoring of Hollywood’s A-list.

Perhaps because of, rather than despite, the furore Gervais has been asked to host the next Golden Globes after it was revealed that the ratings went up again this year.

However, Office star Gervais says that two year’s as the Globes host may be enough.

“The ratings went up again, and the organisers asked me to consider a third year, “Gervais said.

“(But) I don’t think I should. I don’t know what I could do better. I certainly couldn’t get more press for them, that’s for sure.”

“The response was staggering. It was discussed on every news channel and chat show for weeks,” Gervais wrote in this week’s Heat magazine.

There were complaints that Gervais went too far in his “roasting” of Hollywood celebs at this year’s awards ceremony.

Among his more outrageous statements, he pondered how one film featuring “two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay,” was “the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists.”

Ricky also stuck the boot into actor Robert Downey Jr, introducing him with: “Many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail.”

Gervais has defended his comments, saying that he was hired for his acerbic personality and that none of his targets were offended themselves.

Gervais has not revealed whether he’s said yes or no to next year’s Golden Globe Awards.
