Rihanna turned on the Christmas lights at Westfield Centre in London yesterday as the shopping mega-mall began its efforts to encourage festive spending.

It’s not known whether Rihanna’s red hair is a declaration of her dedication to Christmas spirit, but the 22-year-old did tell shoppers that she “loves Christmas time” because she “loves gift-wrapping” presents for family and friends.

Hundreds of red roses covered the Westfield stage where Rihanna was joined by a group of children from the Help A London Child charity as she counted down to illuminate the shopping centre.

Michael Gutman, managing director of Westfield, said before the event: “We are incredibly excited that Rihanna is launching Christmas for Westfield London.

“She is a global star and has enormous appeal to our customers. Not only is her music of the moment she is also a fashion icon.”

Westfield was packed as Rihanna fans turned up to catch sight of the singer. Riri tweeted:

“Westfield Mall, London! Its BANANAS in here!”

Rihanna flew in to London to turn on the Westfield lights yesterday the fact that she’d been at the funeral of late Barbadian Prime Minister, David Thompson, the day before.

If you’re a massive Rihanna fan and you can handle lots of teenage screaming, then watch this fan video from Westfield last night.
