Rio cinema, Dalston

When the light starts to fail on Kingsland High St, you can still see the Dalston Rio lit up like a Christmas tree. The building dates back from 1915 and its distinctive Art Deco facade has made it something of an East London institution.

If you’re sick of going to chain cinemas, then get along to the Rio, where you can drink cups of tea and eat homemade cake.

You can catch general release fare such as the Social Network but next month, they’ll show the complete version of Fritz Lang’s epic Metropolis. There’s also a late-night double bill on Halloween, with two cult gems, The Devil Rides Out and Cat People.

The Sunday matinees are an absolute boon for film buffs or for those seeking something a bit different. Get online and check their programme – it’s equal parts obscure and fascinating.
