He appeared at Southwark Crown Court and denied sexually assaulting four girls – the youngest of whom was age seven.

Mr Harris’ wife Alwen and their daughter Bindi, along with other members of his family and supporters, sat in the public gallery to watch the proceedings.

Mr Harris moved to England 50 years ago. In his time as a celebrity, he has hosted programmes on the BBC, and was also the presenter of the long-running Animal Hospital series, as well as performing at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert. He has been awarded an MBE, an OBE, and a CBE, and in 2012 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honour’s List.

Mr Harris was arrested under Operation Yewtree, the inquiry set up following revelations that Jimmy Savile had abused hundreds of children, despite concerns being raised.
