Roman Road Market, Bethnal Green

London is old. There are buildings that pre-date the discovery of Australia and New Zealand. Bear in mind, then, the history of the Roman Road market, which sits on the oldest trade route in Britain – the road out of London to Colchester, Essex. In the olden days, it was a prized piece of territory because of its economic significance. Nowadays, you won’t come across any marauding bands of Celts, but you will find plenty of bargains instead.

The market, situated in the heart of the East End, is a lively mish-mash of knick-knacks, homeware, books, clothes and food. It’s open Saturdays from 9am to 5.30pm but if you want to avoid the weekend crowds, you can also head over on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
