Stosur had chances to move through to the third round against the world No 50 and continue a bid to win the tournament she claimed in 2011, but couldn’t deliver when it mattered.

The Aussie No 1 was up 4-1 in the deciding game after winning four points in a row and had a match point at 7-6. She then saved a match point at 8-7 but couldn’t hold on.

Stosur’s campaign at Flushing Meadows began well as she dominated American Lauren Davis 6-1, 6-4 in just 77 minutes.

No big deal for the 23rd seed but it was a step up on her first round loss last year. But the form didn’t continue and she has to wait another year.

The result is another Grand Slam disappointment for Stosur who bowed out of Wimbledon in the first round this year.
