Sandwiched between the railway line and the viaduct in the area’s backstreets is Shepherd’s Bush Market, a slightly scruffy but authentic row of stalls selling all manner of goods, from knick-knacks to snacks and clothing.

The market is narrow, creating the impression of a long corridor lined with those selling their wares, but this only adds to the busy atmosphere.

As with most street markets, it’s the combination of smells that cap the experience. Shepherd’s Bush Market has a distinctly Middle Eastern flavour so there’s no shortage of spices filling the air, mixing with other exotic perfumes.

The place really comes to life on Saturdays – it’s closed Sundays – but there’s some great fresh produce during the week as well.
