Who would be your ideal travel partner and why?
Wow – tough one! I’d have quite a few I reckon… Michael Palin would probably top the list though, but also Dawn French for the sheer comedy of it, David Attenborough for his outlook, brain and understanding.
What was your favourite destination last year and why?
Thailand. When I got there I realised that it had been 10 years since my last trip. I love the people, the sights, the culture and of course, the food! The contrast between the South, the North and central Thailand means it’s got something for everyone to enjoy and making sure you take them all in not only gives you a full flavour of the country but makes it feel like you’ve had three holidays in one.
Describe the most unusual situation you’ve found yourself in while travelling.
Eating brain and tongue curry in The Gambia was pretty out there – and still not sure what kind of brain and tongue it was!
Name two up-and-coming destinations for 2013 and why.
Burma Burma has still got that undiscovered feel but is getting more and more popular. I’d like to visit the main cities of Rangoon and Mandalay. Croatia’s on the map already but its going to join the EU this summer. Apparently the celebrations are going to be epic so there’s no better time to try island hopping or one of the festivals, they have some amazing DJs.
If you could return to any country you’ve been to, what would it be and why?
The Dominican Republic has definitely gotten a hold on me! Love the place for its variety and especially, its people.
From Puerto Plata in the North where you have a real flavour of something coastal and very Dominican, down to Jarabacoa for a bit of rafting and adventure. There’s hiking at Pico Duarte, the Caribbean’s highest point and incredible beaches at La Romana, plus the capital, Santo Domingo has an incredible colonial centre with an amazing mix of architectural and cultural heritage.
What’s the one thing you can’t travel without and why?
Sad but true – I’d have to say a laptop! For practical reasons but also posting smug shots, blogging about what you’ve been up to and keeping in touch with people back home.
Give us an overview of what you’ll be discussing at the TNT Travel Show

Who will find your talk relevant?
Hopefully everyone! There are certain things every traveller should think about before they go away, staying safe can seem boring but there’s nothing dull about coming home healthy and happy… with some incredible stories and photos.
