Deputies entering the home of one Assif Mayar found the 1.5 metre long alligator in a plexiglass tank nearby to a 15 kilogram stash of marijuana with a street value of over $100,000.
“We get guard dogs all of the time when we search for grow houses and people stashing away all types of dope. But alligators? You just don’t see that every day,” Alameda County Sergeant JD Nelson said.
The alligator, whose name is ‘Mr Teeth’ was apparently acquired by Mr Mayar as some sort of homage to commemorate the death of famous rapper Tupac Shakur.
Mayar, who was already on probation having pleaded guilty to charges of disturbing the peace last year was arrested under suspicion of possessing marijuana for sale.
He could also face citations from the California Fish and Game Commission, including possession of an exotic animal without a permit.
“We have come across alligators before, but nobody can remember one this big and situated in such close proximity to act sort of as a sentry to the marijuana,” Nelson said.
Thankfully sanity prevailed and instead of being charged as an accessory, Mr Teeth was taken to the Oakland Zoo where presumably he’ll live happily ever after… Or maybe he’ll be made into a pair of shoes.
