Sofitel Macau is certainly fancy – spacious marble lobby, big pink chandelier, you get the picture – but the atmosphere and friendly staff make it a relaxed place to stay.
And should you wish to have a little flutter, there is a very low-key casino onsite where you can lose a few hundred patacas on roulette (although not much English is spoken here). The Old Macau historical quarter, where you can wander and enjoy the Portuguese colonial architecture, is also close by.
Wow factor Many of the rooms have dizzying views out onto the harbour, so if you’re suffering from jetlag you can console yourself by watching the sun rise over the water.
Rooms Comfortable and spacious, if a little generic. Bathrooms are the best bit, with giant rainshowers and lots of L’Occitane goodies.
Bill, please Standard rooms from £115pn.
