Thousands of South Africans queued today to see the World Cup trophy. But we’re wondering if Saffas know this’ll be the closest they come to the Cup with the odds stacked that the host nation will be out of the tournament in the first round. (Hate mail below please!)

Seriously, there were long queues in Cape Town’s Khayelitsha township as residents dressed in Bafana Bafana shirts waited to see the trophy. Before that, Fifa officials took the solid-gold trophy straight to the home of Nelson Mandela, who was one of the inspirations behind South Africa hosting the tournament.

The spangly trophy now starts a month-long tour of the country before the World Cup starts on 11 June.
