The star-studded champions back up the 5-1 flogging to Holland in their opener with a tighter but still limp showing against the dark horses Chile, who beat Australia 3-1 in their opener.

Spain had won their last three major tournaments with back-to-back Euro championships and the 2010 Cup in South Africa, in which they beat the Dutch 1-0 in the final.

Now Holland and Chile will face off in their final group match to decide who tops group B and who avoid facing the favourites Brazil, who are expected to top group A despite a 0-0 stand-off with Mexico on Tuesday night.

Despite the talent at their disposal, it didn’t turn up in Brazil. Diego Costa, the Atletico Madrid striker who’s struggled with injury, had 12 shots against Chile with none of them on target in a sign that things just didn’t click.
