J Abrams’ film beat Spectre (£93.5m) and has also overtaken Avatar (£94m) as the second most successful film in history in the UK.

The Force Awakens stars original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher together with Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk are producing with Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers. The screenplay is by J.J. Abrams & Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt.

However Star Wars: The Force Awakens still has a way to go before it can compete with 1997’s Titanic and 2009’s Avatar which took US$2.18bn and US$2.78bn worldwide, respectively.
