The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings across many regions of the UK with the possibility that winds could affect travel and cause damage to buildings.

Winds of up to 50mph have been reported in several areas, while the Hebrides saw gusts of 97mph.

Wales was also battered by strong winds and residents have been warned over possible flooding.

Scotland is bearing the brunt of the storms and the Met Office has issued warnings for both snow and high winds.

Travel disruption is being reported due to the poor weather and some East Coast main line trains between London and Scotland were forced to start and terminate at Newcastle upon Tyne.

Between London and Harrogate and Hull, buses replaced trains on some East Coast services.

Meanwhile, drivers planning to use the Dartford Crossing between Kent and Essex were warned of delays due to gale-force winds.
