Skydiver Mark Sutton was killed yesterday when he leapt from a helicopter flying at an altitude of 3300m as part of a wingsuiting event near Martigny, Switzerland.

It is thought the former army officer crashed into a mountain and died instantly from his injuries.

Sutton had been participating in an event with 20 other wingsuiters for a company that makes extreme sports videos.

Sutton jumped into the Olympic stadium last year dressed as James Bond as part of Danny Boyle’s opening ceremony, and had only last week posted a picture online taken in the helicopter moments before the jump.

Gary Connery, who leapt into the stadium dressed as the Queen last summer, tweeted yesterday: “All you jumpers out there, stay safe, make wise choices and know your limits and your locations. Live to tell your stories. One love.”
