Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney has been named Australia’s most unlikely new tourist destination, with the state government keen to position it as comparable to Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, the Arlington National near Washington DC and La Recoleta in Buenos Aires.

Fiona Heslop, the chief executive of Rookwood, said the cemetery attracts backpackers.

“It’s quite common for us to find campervans arriving,” said Heslop.

A fascination with graves and the dead are not the only reason for visiting the graveyard, it’s becoming popular with picnickers, cyclists and artists throughout the weekends.
