The thermometer could rise as high as 28°C today – beating this year’s earlier record, 26.8°C, which was recorded in Southampton in June.

Weather forecaster Sean Penston said: “Fair weather cloud will clear in the late morning to leave plenty of sunshine with a pleasant southwesterly breeze.”

The hot temperatures will carry on until Friday, but as luck would have it, the rain and cooler temperatures will return for the weekend.

“I wouldn’t rule out an isolated shower on Saturday, and there is a risk of a few sharp showers on Sunday,” said Mr Penston.
