Paramount has revealed a new trilogy of movies is in production based on James Cameron’s box office busting, cine-defining series, which saw Arnold Schwarzenegger shoot to fame as a monosyllabic cyborg from the future sent back to kill the future resistance leader John Connor.
It is not confirmed yet whether Arnie will be involved in the new stand-alone series, the first movie of which is due for release in the summer of 2015, but the Austrian Oak’s comments suggest it is highly likely we’ll see him back in black and kicking ass as the time-travelling assassin.
Earlier this year Arnie hinted that he would be back in the roles that made him famous, leading to speculation he would return as the Terminator – he did say, several times that he would be back so we should believe him.
James Cameron’s The Terminator was released in 1984 and was a box office smash. It’s follow up in 1991, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, was even more so, and was a landmark in the evolution of computer generated effects. A third film emerged in 2003, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, also starring Arnie but was less well received by fans and critics.
A new trilogy was launched with 2009’s Terminator Salvation, starring Christian Bale and Sam Worthington, which featured a CGI Arnie-looking Terminator, but its average box office performance stalled follow-on films.
