A report in the Detroit News said that the boy managed to drive five kilometres before other motorists spotted him and managed to get him to pull over.

It is said that during his joyride his parents were both still at home asleep in their bed.

Police in the area had already been reportedly warned by other motorists that a car had been driving erratically in the early hours of the morning before they finally arrived to find the child.

“I opened the door and asked him what he was doing,” county sheriff deputy Karl Sapp told USA Today.

The boy reportedly replied that he was on his way to pick up some Chinese food for his breakfast and to get the car repaired at a local dealership.

Sapp said that the boy had said that the car had been damaged by his father, although it was later found that it was the child who had damaged the front bumper of the car.

“I don’t know how he was able to operate everything and see at the same time,” Sapp is quoted as saying.

“Apparently, he was close enough that he could reach the pedals. He had never driven before,” Sapp said. “Nobody taught him.”

The boy’s father was later called and told to come and collect both the car and his son. The police haven’t yet decided whether or not they will press charges.
