The scene: It’s a local with a difference. Yes, there are wooden tables, a cosy atmosphere and bar punters that range from couples sharing a bottle of wine to groups of men sinking a pint after playing footy in the park, but The Earl Spencer’s main attraction is its food.

The grub: The menu changes daily and rarely disappoints – enjoy a pint of smoked prawns with home-made bread, roasted quail on a watercress salad or a fillet of haddock served with sea vegetables and lemon butter.

Behind the bar: There’s a wide range of wines on offer and beer and cider on tap.

Bill please: A bottle of wine, starter to share and two main dishes came to about £50.

Verdict: This is a regular favourite for reliably good food among Southfields’ limited dining-out options.
