Budding bartenders and cocktail lovers can rejoice as 171 Portobello Road has launched ‘A Bon Vivant’s Guide to Classic Gin Cocktails’ – a masterclass which will guide you through the fascinating history and trade secrets behind the classic cocktails every discerning lady or gentleman should know how to make.
Created by the gin gurus who host the infamous Ginstitute sessions (the ultimate gin experience that culminates in making your own distillation), the 90 minute interactive session will see you tasting a martini based on the original version from 1882 and learning about prohibition favourite Clover Club. Savour your way through the decades in London’s second smallest museum whilst learning about gin’s fascinating (and often miserable) history in cocktails from your Ginstructors.

The idea behind the interactive sessions was born from The Ginstitute’s desire to champion a return to traditional style cocktails and educate cocktail lovers about its incredible history. Jake Burger, master blender at Portobello Road Gin and Ginstructor says: “Graduates of the Ginstitute often ask us – once they’ve made their own gin – what they can do with it apart from mixing it with tonic. So we’ve created a fun and unique experience for groups of friends that revolves around learning how to make some of our favourite classic cocktails.”
“The cocktail occasion is continuing to flourish as – alongside the current ‘gin-naissance’ – we’re finding there’s a desire to learn more about how gin was historically drunk in cocktails. We’ve helped over 10,000 people make their own bespoke gin blend at the Ginstitute now, so we hope these masterclasses will give our students the tools they need to enjoy gin at home in a splendid fashion.”
Tickets for The Ginstitute’s ‘A Bon Vivants Guide to Classic Gin Cocktails’ are priced at £60 for a 90 minute session and are available to purchase here.
