The Other Guys

With Bruce Willis stinker Cop Out still fresh in the memory, the thought of sitting through another Hollywood buddy cop comedy is enough to put anyone off their popcorn.

Fortunately, The Other Guys is in a different class thanks to some clever casting. After badly losing his way with Land of the Lost, Ferrell returns to form as Allen Gamble, a policeman who handles the paperwork while supercops Danson and Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L Jackson) see all the action and get the glory.

Assigned to desk duty alongside Gamble is partner Terry Hoitz (a pitch-perfect Wahlberg) who has become the butt of the department’s jokes after accidentally injuring a sports star. When the duo get a chance to hit the streets and fight crime things go tits up at a rate of knots.

Despite a so-so storyline the film is consistently funny thanks to excellent chemistry between Ferrell and Wahlberg. The support they receive is top class as well, with Michael Keaton sensational as the pair’s captain and Eva Mendes stealing scenes as Gamble’s wife. Steve Coogan falls flat as the villain but this is still a much-needed shot in the arm for the buddy cop genre.

3/5
