Nick Cave & Warren Ellis (Mute)

In attempting to bring the suffocating bleakness of Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road to the big screen one wonders why director John Hillcoat bothered with a score at all, and didn’t just let menacing silences à la No Country For Old Men do the trick.

There’s a little too much light and warmth in Cave and Ellis’s spare piano/violin evocations and not quite enough dread and foreboding to punctuate the story’s more harrowing moments.
