Workers walked out last Friday demanding higher wages at the Marikana Mine and the dispute came to a head yesterday when police opened fire on protestors, leaving at least 30 dead.
Several thousand miners have gathered at the mine in the town 62 miles north-west of Johannesburg calling for a pay rise of more than $1000 a month.
It has been reported that the police opened fire when a group of striking miners rushed towards them and that the police had previously tried to subdue the crowd with tear gas, a water canon and stun grenades.
