No17 – Senegal beat France (2002)
In 1998 France had been crowned champions in front of an adoring home crowd, but in the opening match of the 2002 tournament they got their pants pulled down by the audacious Senegalese in one of the tournament’s great upsets.
Papa Bouba Diop fired home in the 30th minute and Senegal hung on to win 1-0. France endured a wretched tournament, failing to score a single goal, let alone win a game. Senegal, on the other hand, went all the way to the last eight, matching Cameroon’s 1990 campaign as the best performance by an African nation.
