No4 – Maradona’s Hand of God (1986)
Four years after going to war over the Falklands, Argentina and England met in the quarter-final of the World Cup. The Argentinian captain Maradona, then 26, put his side into the lead when he latched onto a looping ball in the box and appeared to punch the ball past English keeper Peter Shilton. Replays showed a clear hand-ball, but the score stood. Later, Maradona was evasive, claiming the goal was scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.” No wonder the Poms are still annoyed about it.
