The influential festival hosts hundreds of new films and showcases talent from around the world. This year’s highlights include screenings of Before Midnight, starring Ethan Hawke and Big Men, a documentary produced by Brad Pitt.

Why: Founded in 2002 by a collective which included Hollywood legend Robert De Niro, the Tribeca Film Festival has screened over 1300 films from over 80 countries, including emerging and established directors, since then.

It’s also been credited with regenerating the Tribeca neighbourhood’s economy.

Do it because: Well, other than the chance to mingle with Manhattan’s beautiful people, there’s also the chance to catch new films, such as Oxyana, a controversial documentary about the prescription drug abuse epidemic in Wyoming County.
