Why: Though Egremont Crab Fair And Sports was established in 1267 – making it one of the oldest fairs in the world – the gurning event didn’t come into force until 1945. Contestants from Canada, Australia, the US and the Netherlands have all taken part in what’s become a bona fide phenomenon.
