According to officials, the driver crashed through temporary barricades set up outside the Mohawk Bar in Austin, Texas where Tyler the Creator was due to perform, killing the pair, a man and a woman who were riding their moped, and hospitalising 23 people – five are in a critical condition.

The driver, who faces two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault by a vehicle, also hit a cab before jumping out of his car and trying to escape on foot.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said he has been taken into custody after being shocked with a stun gun.

Before the incident, the man was driving the wrong direction on a one-way street. Authorities attempted to stop the car, but it sped away, almost hitting a police officer, according to Acevedo.

Witnesses on a YouTube video said the car sped through the crowd, tossing some victims into the air and knocking others down.
