Cricket South Africa Tuesday named two new caps in Gestetner Diamond Eagles all-rounder Ryan McLaren and Nashua Cape Cobras all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt for the opening series of international matches.
McLaren has been included in the Standard Bank ODI squad for the MTN series against Kenya and Bangladesh as well as the Standard Bank International Pro20 against Bangladesh while Kleinveldt has been named for the latter match as well.
McLaren’s selection is dependant on his being released by the England county side, Kent, to whom he is under contract at present.
Another important development is the selection of Johan Botha (pictured) of the Chevrolet Warriors as vice-captain for the two MTN ODI series.
“Johan is to be congratulated on his promotion,” commented acting selection convener Gerald Majola. “He will in all probability captain the side in the two matches against Kenya as we only expect Graeme Smith to recover from injury in time for the MTN ODI series against Bangladesh.”
An interesting development is the selection of an additional six players to practise with the Standard Bank ODI squad ahead of the start of the MTN Series. This represents a mixture of experience (Alviro Petersen, Dillon du Preez and Johann Louw) and youth (Wayne Parnell, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Dean Elgar).
Two other youngsters, Jon-Jon Smuts of the Chevrolet Warriors and Roelof van der Merwe of the Nashua Titans, get their chance in the team going to the Hong Kong tournament next month. Majola said that the ODI squad had been chosen with a view to the ICC World Cup in Asia in 2011 and the Castle Test squad with a view to the more immediate challenge of the home and away series against Australia.
