They spoke to Rebecca Richards, named Young Australian of the Year on January 26.

Richards, 25, has been honoured for her work examining the way in which Aboriginal stories are told through art.

She is currently working at Oxford University analysing colonial representations of Aboriginal people. She’s also working to organize exhibitions at the National Museum of Australia.

Wednesday was the first time Richards had ever met members of the royal family.

“I’m really impressed they know so much about Australia and they take an active interest”, she said after the meeting.

Milliner Frederick Fox was awarded the 2013 Australian of the Year in the UK, but was unable to attend.

The 81-year-old has designed more than 350 hats for the Queen in a 34-year period. He is known as the founder of the fascinator, which he debuted in 1999. He received his royal warrant in 1974.

Past Australian of the Year winners include soccer star Harry Kewell, comedian Tim Minchin and fashionista Yasmin Sewell.
