Get ready for the big freeze with thermal vests, hats and scarves at the ready, particularly if you’re in Wales or the South West where some snow has already fallen.

On Sunday Devon and Cornwall police warned against driving around some parts of the Exmoor and Dartmoor area unless absolutely necessary.

Later this week expect low temperatures with some snow showers predicted for the eastern counties of England and possibly London too.

Last week the Met Office predicted colder weather on the way, saying “Temperatures are likely to be below average this weekend and through next week, bringing the longest spell of colder weather so far this winter.”

According to reports, the cause of this extended chilly spell is cold easterly winds heading towards the UK due to high pressure over Scandinavia and western parts of Russia.

The Met Office also issued a severe cold weather warning across England predicted to last until at least Thursday.
