J Christopher Stevens was among four Americans murdered in today’s attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.

An angry mob fired bullets at embassy buildings and hurled handmade bombs into the compound.

It was the second attack on a US embassy in 24 hours, coming shortly after Egyptian protesters launched a violent response to the film in Cairo on Tuesday night.

The filmmaker who produced the internet film in question, The Innocence Of Muslims, which accuses Mohammed of being a fraud, paedophile and womaniser has gone into hiding.

Writer and director Sam Bacile, a California real estate developer who identifies himself as an Israeli Jew, declared yesterday, ‘Islam is a cancer.’

President Obama condemned the “outrageous attack” on the facility in Benghazi and ordered security be tightened at US diplomatic posts worldwide.

“Chris was a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States. Throughout the Libyan revolution, he selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi,” he said.

A second US man killed in the attack was named as Sean Smith, a father of two who was employed as an information management officer.

The names of the remaining two victims have not yet been released.
