US Marines spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Plenzler said “we cannot release the name of the unit at this time since the incident is being investigated.”
CNN quoted an unnamed US Marine official as the troops in the video were from the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marine Regiment, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
The unit was deployed to Afghanistan in early 2011 and returned in September or October, CNN reported.
In the video, four men in Marine uniforms and combat gear expose their genitals and urinate on three dead bodies. One of the deceased can be seen with a large bloodstain on his chest.
One of the marines can be heard saying, “Have a great day, buddy.”
The Afghan Taliban has described the actions as “barbaric” but said it would not have an impact on planned peace talks.
“Over the past 10 years, there have been hundreds of similar cases that were not revealed,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed told AFP.
The investigation continues.
