Course literature uncovered by Danger Room suggested that the ‘lessons of Hiroshima’ could be employed to wipe out whole cities at a time such as Mecca and Medina, ‘targeting civilian populations where necessary’.

The course was given at the US Joint Forces Staff College, however was later cancelled.

Wired.com, who broke the story said: “A small cabal of self-anointed counterterrorism experts has been working its way through the US military, intelligence, and law enforcement communities trying to convince whoever it could that America’s real terrorist enemy wasn’t al-Qaida [sic] but the Islamic faith itself.”

A sweeping audit of course material has since taken place to remove all similarly inflammatory material.

General Dempsey described the course as “counter to our values of appreciation for religious freedom and cultural awareness” and “just objectionable, academically irresponsible”.

The course was taught for a year to senior soldiers before one an officer complained.

A lieutenant colonel, who taught the course, has been suspended while a full investigation is carried out.
